Artist Statement
Iām interested in exploring memory and desire, especially through portraits. In my paintings, I use patterns, juxtapositions, and closeups to portray subjects that come in and out of focus as if in a dream.
My paintings are the afterimages of my dreams. Just as a drip of paint begins at the brush but takes on its own shape as it trickles or spreads, my paintings are connected to my dream images and depart from them. In painting, as in dreams, flowing over and over an area or experience can bring a stronger sense of emotion, mood, and resonance.
I choose my colors, which range from strong and bright to pale and gloomy, to evoke emotions. I use low saturation and pale tones to express weakness or loss, and muddy colors to express lethargy. The patterns and textures, which can include drips, stippling, and washes of color, are where my own subjectivity comes through most strongly.
In my recent paintings of children and caregivers, I am interested in showing a range of emotional relationships. I focus on gestures that can be read as supportive, loving, protective, detached, neglectful, or oppressive. By creating a dreamlike atmosphere, I hope to emphasize the emotional tone of these relationships and even hint at their future unfolding.
My goal is for my paintings to capture something of the psychological experience of people, times, and places, and in this way, to encourage greater self-awareness and bring us closer to our authentic selves.
